All registered UC Berkeley students can access CAPS and Social Services counseling services. Students do not need to have purchased SHIP to see a counselor. There is no cost to get started. Initial phone and in-person consultations, urgent visits, and short-term counseling visits are all free. Fees apply to other services and are subject to change.

Billing for UHS services
If you have a financial responsibility, payments can be made at the Billing & Cashier Office within seven business days from the date of service. After seven business days, charges are billed to your CalCentral account and payments will need to be made through CalCentral.
Patients without a CalCentral account will receive an invoice by mail. If payment is not received within 30 days, outstanding charges will be forwarded to Berkeley Financial System Collections.

UHS Charges & CalCentral
Fees billed to your CalCentral account will appear as “UHS charges”. The transaction date is not the date of service but reflects when the charges were billed to CalCentral. If you do not recognize the billed amount, contact your insurance carrier or refer to the explanation of benefits statement from your insurance carrier. You may also contact the Billing & Cashier Office.
Other Insurance Plans (Students without SHIP)
Reimbursement
We strongly suggest contacting your insurance carrier to obtain benefit and reimbursement details. Students without SHIP will need to pay for services in full and may submit a claim with the itemized receipt to their insurance company for possible reimbursement.

Why does UHS charge fees?
Medical and counseling services at UHS are funded primarily by student registration fees and patient fees. Registration fees subsidize part of the cost for services, which makes fees lower at UHS compared to services in the community. UHS is a non-profit service; all fees collected cover the basic operating costs of providing services.
What are my payment options?
Payment options include cash, check, Health Opportunity Fund, debit card, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, and Discover).
Payment can be made on the day of service or within the next seven business days. If you need more time to pay your bill, you may request a payment plan through the Billing & Cashier Office.
If you do not pay your bill or arrange a payment plan within seven days from the date of service, UHS will automatically bill your balance to CalCentral.
How will I know if a claim has been paid?
You will receive an explanation of benefits (EOB) statement from your insurance carrier. The EOB shows how much you were charged for the service, the amount covered by your insurance plan, and your out-of-pocket responsibility.
For services beginning August 1, 2023, SHIP students may access EOBs on the Wellfleet website or through the Wellfleet Student mobile app.
For services before August 1, 2023, SHIP students may access EOBs through HealthComp (Wellfleet's third-party administrator).
