Urgent medical or

mental health problems

If you have an urgent medical or mental health problem that cannot wait until UHS is open: 
  • Call the 24/7 Nurse Advice Line at (510) 643-7197 for immediate assistance.
  • If you need to speak with a counselor urgently, call the 24/7 counseling line at (855) 817-5667. SHIP members may contact the 24/7 SHIP Nurse Line at (800) 681-4065.
  • find a local Urgent Care Center with extended hours.
  • find a phone number for a crisis/suicide prevention hotline
  • see information below on emergency contraception, dental emergency, pharmacy refills, and other services 
  • find a local emergency room (The closest to campus is Alta Bates Hospital, 2450 Ashby Ave., just east of Telegraph Ave.) 
Please note: care may be at your own expense; emergency room charges are usually more than urgent care center
Non-urgent problems If your problem can wait until UHS is open:
  • call to schedule an appointment, (510) 642-2000 or schedule online through eTang
  • call to the Advice Nurse (510) 643-7197 or send a secure message through eTang (Advice Nurse for Students and SHIP dependents)
  • Teladoc (Online Telemedicine) - virtual video appointments make seeing a doctor for minor issues easy when the Tang Center is closed.

Cancel appointments Medical appointments:  
  • Call (510) 643-7033, 24 hours a day, to cancel an appointment, or cancel online through eTang. You must cancel at least 24 hours in advance or you will be billed a $25 Late Cancellation Fee. 
Counseling appointments: 
  • Call (510) 642-9494 (CAPS) or (510) 642-6074 (Social Services) 24 hours a day, to cancel an appointment. You must cancel at least 24 hours in advance or you will be billed a Late Cancellation Fee.
Emergency contraception The Morning After Pill, used for emergency contraception (not birth control) needs to be taken within 72-120 hours of unprotected intercourse or a broken condom. (It is most effective if taken within 72 hours.) If you cannot wait for UHS to open, check online for pharmacies that provide emergency contraception. Dental emergency See metlife.com/dental for a list of dentists or call (800) 942-0854 to speak to a dental plan representative.
Insurance referrals No referral from the Student Health Insurance Plan Office is required for visits to an emergency room or urgent care center when UHS is closed. Please provide the facility with your student health insurance card. Claims submitted to insurance will be processed according to the SHIP benefits.

All follow-up care must have an approved referral in advance by the Student Health Insurance Plan Office.
