Billing for UHS services
If we file a claim to your insurance carrier, such as SHIP, we will wait for the claim to be processed before billing any patient responsibility portion to your CalCentral account. Sometimes, this process may take more than seven business days.
Patients without a CalCentral account will receive an invoice by mail. If payment is not received within 30 days, outstanding charges will be forwarded to Berkeley Financial System Collections.
UHS Charges & CalCentral
Other Insurance Plans (Students without SHIP)
Students without SHIP will need to pay for services in full and may submit a claim with the itemized receipt to their insurance company for possible reimbursement. Itemized receipts can be requested by contacting the Cashier’s Office via eTang secure message. We strongly suggest contacting your insurance carrier to obtain benefit and reimbursement details.
PPO Plans
If you have a PPO insurance plan and would like UHS to bill your insurance carrier, please upload your insurance card (see instructions here) and send a secure message to the Cashier in eTang portal. UHS is not an in-network provider for your insurance carrier and you are financially responsible for any billed amount. Any amount not paid by your insurance carrier is your responsibility.
HMO Plans or Government Plans (e.g., Medicare & Medi-Cal)
We cannot send claims to any HMO or government plans as these plans do not accept out-of-network claims.
Why does UHS charge fees?
Medical and counseling services at UHS are funded primarily by student registration fees and patient fees. Registration fees subsidize part of the cost for services, which makes fees lower at UHS compared to services in the community. UHS is a non-profit service; all fees collected cover the basic operating costs of providing services.
What are my payment options?
Payment options include cash, check, Cal 1 Card, Health Opportunity Fund, debit card or credit card (visa, mastercard, and discover).
Payment can be made on the day of service or within the next seven business days. If you need more time to pay your bill, you may request a payment plan through the Billing & Cashier Office.
If you do not pay your bill or arrange a payment plan within seven days from the date of service, UHS will automatically bill your balance to CalCentral.
How will I know if a claim has been paid?
You will receive an explanation of benefits (EOB) statement from your insurance carrier. The EOB shows how much you were charged for the service, the amount covered by your insurance plan, and your out of pocket responsibility.
Students with SHIP may access their EOB statements on the Wellfleet website or Berkeley SHIP mobile app.
