Tiff is a UC Berkeley sophomore, and she has these tips for you after navigating her first year on campus.
- Sign up for student clubs: Check out a few different clubs. You may or may not ever return, but it’s a way to meet people and feel more connected to others.
- Exercise: Go for a walk, take a PE class, etc. It will help manage stress and get out of your head. Check out a yoga class or swimming. Find something you are interested in.
- Introduce yourself to people: They may be the most socially awkward people you will ever meet or they may turn out to be your best friends.
- Don't compare your new life to your high school life: Nor to the college experiences of your friends. Reflect and evaluate your own experiences through your lens and intuition.
- Take advantage of your resources: Visit the Career Center, the Student Learning Center, etc. Ask questions! Don't be afraid to ask for help.
- Be assertive with your roommates: Communicate clearly and set boundaries early.
- Be comfortable having alone time: Try solo activities that bring you joy. You don't always need a friend to see a movie or go for a walk.
