Rahmat Balogun

Rahmat Balogun, DO, MPH

Rahmat Balogun joined UHS in 2019 as an Occupational Health Physician. Prior to joining UHS, Rahmat was a full-time faculty member at UCSF Occupational Health and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine in both the Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM) department and OEM residency. She currently maintains her role as Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF OEM.

Rahmat received her BS from CUNY City College, MS in Neuromuscular Skeletal Medicine from the NY Institute of Technology (NYIT), DO from NYIT’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, and her MPH from UC Berkeley. She has a special clinical interest in mindfulness and its role in health and healing, osteopathic manipulative treatment, occupational allergies and asthma, teaching medical students and residents, and lifestyle medicine. Rahmat was published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine last year, “Occupational Rhinitis and Occupational Asthma: Association or Progression?

Rahmat is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventive (Occupational and Environmental) Medicine.

Arleen Ervin-King, RN, NP, MSN

Arleen Ervin-King joined UHS in 2012 and serves as the Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner. She received her BS in Nursing from Samuel Merritt/St. Mary’s College (1999) and her MSN  from UC San Francisco School of Nursing (2004).

Arleen previously worked at the UC San Francisco Occupational Health Clinic for five years with a specific focus on work-related musculoskeletal injuries in her final two years. She also staffed the UC San Francisco Needlestick Hotline which provides continuity of care to UC San Francisco personnel who have had possible blood-borne pathogen exposure through needle sticks or other injuries.

Arleen is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Michael Goertz Occ Health Physician

Michael Goertz, MD, MPH, FACOEM

Dr. Michael Goertz joined UHS in 2019 as an Occupational Health Physician. He received his MD and MPH from the University of Minnesota and has a special clinical interest in disability prevention and management. Dr. Goertz has published papers on risk factors for poor outcomes in low back pain and is a member of the ACOEM and ICSI Low Back Pain Guideline Committees.

Dr. Goertz is certified by the American Board of Preventive (Occupational and Environmental) Medicine.

Jennifer Guerra, MA

WorkStrong Program Coordinator

Jen joined UHS as a Wellness Coordinator for Faculty and Staff Wellness Programs in January 2018. In May 2019, she transitioned to the position of WorkStrong Program Coordinator where she helps employees who have been injured on the job regain health and engage in health-promoting fitness and nutrition programs. Jen is a certified Health Coach with a background in corporate wellness and event management. She holds an MA in Health Education and a BS in Business Administration & marketing. She studied at John F. Kennedy University, Chapman University, and at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Her passions include health and healing through the arts, specifically dance, holistic health, and helping others discover sustainable ways to live balanced lives. In her free time she enjoys dancing ballet and ballroom, hiking, biking, and spending time with her family.

Karen Johal

Karen Johal, MSc, RDN

Dietitian 

Karen Johal joined UHS in 2018 as the Health Education Dietitian. She received both her BS in Nutritional Sciences and Dietetics and her BA in Psychology from UC Berkeley, completed a Dietetic Internship at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and received her MSc in Health Psychology from the University of Surrey. Karen serves as the Diversity Liaison for the Bay Area District of the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and volunteers with a UC Berkeley club that organizes free health clinics across the Bay Area (she also volunteered here as an undergraduate). She has a special clinical interest in weight management for overweight and underweight individuals, plant-based lifestyles, holistic health, and behavior change.

Andrea Lopez, MA

Imma Martiello, MA

Imma Martiello joined the Occupational Health team in 2020. Imma had previously been an MA for four years and received her training at San Leandro Adult School. She loves traveling, spending time with her family, going to street festivals, and trying different types of food.

Susan Nelson OHC

Susan Nelson, COHC

Certified Occupational Hearing Conservationist

Susan Nelson joined the Occupational Health team in 2001. She studied Linguistics at The National School of Anthropology in Mexico City. She has a special interest in hearing health and hearing loss prevention. As a Certified Occupational Hearing Conservationist, and in accordance with the campus Hearing Conservation Program, Susan performs baseline audiometry testing, conducts annual follow-up monitoring, and provides hearing protection education to noise-exposed campus staff. She is also a certified spirometry technician. Her hobbies include cycling, reading, and travel.

Erika Schwilk, MD, MPH

Occupational and Environmental Health Chief

Erika Schwilk joined UHS in 2011 as a physician in Occupational Health. She received her BA in Biology with environmental emphasis from Occidental College and her MD from the Medical College of Wisconsin. Erika completed training in internal medicine at UC Davis where she worked as a hospitalist. She then completed fellowship training in Occupational and Environmental Medicine at UC San Francisco and obtained her MPH in Environmental Health from UC Berkeley.

Dr. Schwilk is certified by the American Board of Preventive (Occupational and Environmental) Medicine.

Dennis Shusterman 2018

Dennis Shusterman, MD, MPH

Dr. Dennis Shusterman joined UHS in 2014 as a physician in Occupational Health. Dr. Shusterman received his BA in Human Development from Pacific Oaks College (1971), his MD from UC Davis (1978), and his MPH in Environmental Health Sciences from UC Berkeley (1982).

Dr. Shusterman is the author of roughly 90 peer-reviewed publications and received the Clean Air Award for Research from Breathe California in 2013. He has a special clinical interest in glove dermatitis occupational rhinitis and asthma and vocal cord dysfunction.

Dr. Shusterman is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Preventive (Occupational and Environmental) Medicine.

Amy Vaughn, RN

Amy Wheeler, RN

Amy Wheeler joined UHS in 2013 as a Registered Nurse in Urgent Care and moved to the Occupational Health team in 2020. She received her BA in Anthropology and her BSN/BN from Samuel Merritt in Oakland.
