You can be healthy and fit without being thin. As part of a social movement called Health at Every Size (HAES), dietitians and doctors are moving away from assessing people’s health according to their weight. The HAES philosophy is based on the idea that people of all sizes deserve respect and good health, and that size does not determine health.

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we spoke to University Health Services social worker Viviana Urdaneta Melo to better understand intimate partner violence, and what we can do to help those who are impacted.

On date 1, he says your blouse is ugly. 

On date 15, he says you look like you belong on the streets in that blouse.

On date 50, he says if you ever wear that blouse again, he will rip it off.

CAPS would like to remind everyone that seeking support is a sign of strength, courage, and resiliency, not a sign of weakness.

Many in our community are worried about the proposed repeal of ACA and how that may impact them and their families. University Health Services at UC Berkeley is dismayed at the President’s recent action to rescind federal guidance to educational institutions for transgender students. We believe trans rights are human rights. The President’s action does not change California state law which grants transgender students the right to use public facilities that align with their gender identity, and it doesn’t change our commitment to protecting and providing equal rights and services to our transgender students.

On Monday, March 20, local health officials confirmed a single case of meningococcal meningitis in a UC Berkeley student, who has been treated and is now recovering well. Campus and University Health Services officials are working closely with the City of Berkeley Public Health and the State of California’s Department of Public Health to identify people and locations visited, monitor the case, and directly notify the individuals who were in close contact with the student.
