Meet the Elder Care Staff

Maureen Kelly, EdD, LCSW

Elder Care Counselor

Maureen has worked with elders and their families in a professional capacity since 1983, when she graduated with her MSW from the National Catholic School of Social Service in Washington, DC. Maureen earned her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of San Francisco (1991), after completing her research on the emotional burden experienced by adult daughters caring for their elderly mothers. In addition to teaching graduate students, she has worked in a wide range of settings from non-profits serving low-income seniors in San Francisco’s Tenderloin to hospitals treating clinically depressed elders. She has facilitated caregiver support groups and counseled individuals in her private psychotherapy practice since 1988, and has worked as the Elder Care Counselor at UC Berkeley’s Employee Assistance program since 2005.

Karen Patchell, MA

Be Well at Work - Faculty/Staff Health Programs Manager

After earning her double honors BA in Spanish and Anthropology from the National University of Ireland, Karen received her MA in Social Anthropology with distinction from Queens University, Belfast. Karen began her career at UC Berkeley in 2014, bringing with her a vast array of experience in cross-border identity, cross-cultural communications, addiction, and youth development services. Karen is certified RAD women's self defense instructor. She is also an avid dragon boat paddler and enjoys watching rugby when she’s not taking advantage of the fantastic California weather.
