Make a long distance relationship work

July 9, 2014

My first relationship is a long distance one. It’s going to be a year before we’re reunited. We were both raised in completely different environments. I keep telling myself to stop worrying so much and just enjoy it. It’s hard though. How can you develop a relationship over webcam/online chatting?

It’s going to be a challenge, long distance relationships are never easy. That being said, they can work if you really love the person, trust them, are willing to wait for them, and most importantly, WORK on the relationship despite this inconvenience. With long distance, you have to make sure to try to keep the relationship fresh and exciting. For example, talking on the phone every night can get dull, so maybe listen to music together or schedule a time to talk maybe when both of your favorite movies or sitcoms are on TV so you can watch it together. While chatting online, maybe you can play a game together either on the internet or a game that is possible to play without being in the same room - get creative! You also have to maintain contact by texting, video chatting, etc. almost every day in order to sustain that emotional connection. Maybe you can mail him/her a letter or something personal of yours- in this way you have some sort of physical representation in his life. You can also surprise him/her by mailing him a present or booking a surprise flight to see him/her in order to keep some spontaneity and excitement in the relationship. The silver lining in a long distance however, is that you get time to yourself now. Get a hobby and always try to distract yourself if you ever feel like you’re missing him /her or feel lonely.

Long distance relationships aren’t easy, but if two people really want to make it work, there are definitely ways to go about it. It’s important to keep each other updated on what’s going on in your lives. Communication is key. Make time for each other by setting aside “webcam dates” say x number of times a week, and text or email each other regularly to stay connected; good morning texts, or other messages that let them know you’re thinking of them, can go a long way and bring a smile to their face. As another idea, mailing postcards, hand-written letters, or other occasional little gifts to your long-distance significant other often makes for cute surprises. In the meantime, don’t forget to enjoy the company of the friends that you do have around you. Having a strong support system can really help you when times are hard. Good luck!
