I've been cheated on - should I forgive her?

July 30, 2014

My girlfriend cheated on me and she swears it was a one time drunken mistake. We’ve been together for 4 years. Should I forgive her? She’s never lost my trust before but I am really hurt by this.

Darling, Mama Luv understands how hurtful it can be when a loved one cheats on you. For your situation, one thing to consider is how your girlfriend feels about you and the relationship. If you are completely sure that she cares about you a lot, made a big mistake, and would never cheat on you again, then it is possible to forgive her for what happened. However, if you are or have been feeling unsure or think that your girlfriend has deteriorating interest in the relationship, then it’s important to consider the possibility of this relationship moving forward because things can get rocky or someone will be hurt again. Regardless of what happens, sweetie, don’t forget to keep your chin up, strut with confidence, and shake what your mama gave ya! Mama Luv is here to help. Love, Mama Luv

I’m sorry to hear that, it’s never fun to feel betrayed. A similar situation happened with a good friend of mine. She chose to give her boyfriend the benefit of the doubt, and they have really worked things out together and grown as a couple. It’s been almost a year since that drunken mistake! I think you should give your relationship a chance. You have been together for 4 years, and people do make some really big mistakes, but I think it would be a shame to throw away all that you two have worked for as a couple. If this turns out to be a reoccurring problem, I would say to reevaluate, but for now, work things out. Also, I think it’s fair for you to not be fully and completely trusting of your girlfriend - that’s something that needs to be earned back, but you should at least give her that chance :) –Emily
