Okay, so professor crushes are tricky. What about GSIs?
The one in question is at least five years older than me and a Ph.D. candidate in a field I'm VERY interested in, but I'm just a lowly undergrad struggling in this GSI's class. I understand (and agree) that taking any action while the student-teacher relationship is going on is unprofessional and bound to lead to sticky situations, but is there anything I can do now to give myself a chance later (other than doing well in the class)?
To be on the safe side, I would be very hesitant to show any interest in your GSI at all. If they became romantically involved with you that could really damage their reputation and/or their chances of obtaining a Ph.D. It’s best not to become involved romantically with professors or GSIs at all when their jobs or reputations are at risk. That being said, if you still wish to pursue your GSI the only thing you can do right now that would still be appropriate is do well in the class, ask a lot of questions, go to office hours, be a good student, and make yourself memorable. - Nicky
Just like professor crushes, GSI crushes are very normal! After all, your GSI is an expert in the field you are pursuing - and similarities are a plus. Mama Luv is glad that you understand things must remain professional while you are a student in your GSI's class. But there are things you can do in the meantime! Besides doing well in class, Mama Luv would suggest attending more of your GSI’s office hours so you can learn more about the material you’re interested in and also get to know your GSI! Ask questions that have your GSI talk about his/her interest and how s/he started in the field. This allows you the chance to get a better understanding of your GSI and vice versa! Let him get to know you. Plus, your interest in the field can be attractive too. Just make sure to remain professional. Keep your chin up, strut confidently, and shake what your mama gave you (trust, it helps!). Mama Luv is here to help.
