SHIP for Non-Registered Students

Who May Enroll?

Filing fee graduate or concurrent enrollment undergraduate students may purchase the voluntary plan for a maximum of one semester. The student must have been enrolled in SHIP the Fall or Spring term immediately preceding the term for which the student wants to purchase. For information on SHIP for dependents, see our Insurance for Dependents page. Effective Fall 2018, SHIP is not available to students who have graduated or are on leave from the University. For help transitioning off of SHIP, please see our tips here.
NOTE: Filing Fee and Concurrent Enrollment students are NOT automatically enrolled. If you purchase the voluntary plan, you are also eligible to add your dependents under the voluntary plan. Please see the information available on Insurance for Dependents for details.

Filing Fee (Graduate students only)

Graduate students must apply to their academic departments for official Filing Fee status. Filing Fee status is in lieu of registration to either file a dissertation, file a thesis or to take a comprehensive exam. Filing Fee students are not allowed to take courses while on Filing Fee.  Filing Fee can only be used once. To complete the Voluntary SHIP enrollment process, the student must submit a letter from his or her academic department confirming the student’s approved Filing Fee Status to the Student Health Insurance Office.

Concurrent Enrollment Status (Undergraduate students only)

Undergraduate students in their final semester of study who are completing degree requirements or recovering from academic probation through UC Berkeley Extension's Concurrent Enrollment Program are considered to be on Concurrent Enrollment Status. To complete the Voluntary SHIP enrollment process while on Concurrent Enrollment Status, a student must submit a letter of approval from his or her academic department and proof of payment for the class(es) or class schedule at UC Berkeley Extension to the Student Health Insurance Office.

Graduates  $2,231 - one semester only

Enrollment Maximum

A non-registered student on filing fee or concurrent enrollment status is eligible to enroll in the SHIP Voluntary plan for one semester.

To enroll by faxfax an enrollment form and payment information to USI Insurance at (877) 612-7966.

To enroll by mail, mail an enrollment form and payment to:

  • For undergraduate students on concurrent enrollment status, under "2017-2018 UC Berkeley-USHIP-Voluntary", select "enroll in coverage". Then select "Spring/Summer Voluntary". 
  • For graduate students who are on filing fee status, under "2017-2018 UC Berkeley-GSHIP-Voluntary", select "enroll in coverage". Then select "Spring/Summer Voluntary".
