COVID-19 Dependent Care Leave Options
UC Emergency Paid Sick Leave (EPSL)
UCOP is offering all its employees, including represented employees, an additional 2021 allotment of Emergency Paid Sick Leave (EPSL) - available for use immediately.
UCOP’s 2021 EPSL is available to employees who are unable to work or telework for the reasons below, which include those specified in the original EPSL provisions and a few additions:
Reason 1: The employee is subject to a federal, state, or local quarantine or isolation order related to COVID 19.
Reason 2: The employee has been advised by a health care provider to self-quarantine due to concerns related to COVID-19.
a) The employee is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and is seeking a medical diagnosis from a health care provider;
b) New: The employee has been exposed to COVID-19 and is seeking or awaiting the results of a diagnostic test for, or a medical diagnosis of, COVID-19;
c) New: The University has requested that the employee obtain a diagnostic test for, or a medical diagnosis of, COVID-19, and the employee is seeking or awaiting those results;
d) New: The employee is obtaining immunization related to COVID-19; or
e) New: The employee is recovering from an injury, disability, illness, or condition related to obtaining immunization related to COVID-19.
Reason 4: The employee is caring for an individual who is either subject to a federal, state, or local quarantine or isolation order related to COVID-19 or who has been advised by a health care provider to self-quarantine due to concerns related to COVID-19.
Reason 5: The employee is caring for their child whose school or place of care has closed (or whose child care provider is unavailable) for reasons related to COVID-19.
Reason 6: The employee is experiencing any other substantially similar condition specified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Full-time employees may take up to 80 hours of EPSL, while those who are part-time may take up to the two-week equivalent. As before, employees will receive their regular rate of pay during EPSL. Caregiver Connect Support Group (for Caregivers of Elders)
Join the Elder Care Program for Caregivers Connect. The group meets virtually on the first Tuesday of the month, and the third Friday of the month from 11 am -12 pm.
These small group meetings will focus on a different topic each month. You are welcome to drop-in for any subject of interest.
Registration is required to attend these Zoom meetings.
Support for Parents and Caregivers of Children
Join Be Well at Work for Parenting and Caregivers of Children Support. The group meets virtually on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 11 am - noon. These small group meetings will focus on a different topic each month. You are welcome to drop-in for any subject of interest.

UC’s Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (DepCare FSA)
UC’s Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (DepCare FSA) allows employees to set aside $5,000 ($2,500 if you are married and filing a separate income tax return) of pretax money each year for dependent care expenses.
Educational Enrichment & After School Program (Berkeley Rec Sports)
As the start of a new academic year is upon us, we are excited to announce a special youth program for the children of UC Berkeley faculty and staff members. The Recreational Sports Department will be facilitating a full day of educational enrichment and recreational program offerings at Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area for children aged 5-11 years old.
Early Education Childhood Program (ECEP)
The ECEP is working under various new protocols and procedures to comply with health and safety guidelines. Due to this, class sizes have been significantly reduced and have resulted in less availability of care spaces for families.
ECEP’s 2020-21 school year will commence with limited enrollment based upon the enrollment priorities established by the University.
They will continue to accept applications from new families for their waiting list, however at this time they will not be able to provide care for any new families.
As part of University of California's employee benefit program, employees have free access to Sittercity's extensive database of babysitters, nannies, elder companions, pet sitters, and housekeepers.
The cost of membership is paid by the University. Employees pay only for the services of the caregivers they select. Visit the UC SitterCity site to activate your free membership.
UC Breastfeeding Support Program
The Breastfeeding Support Program (BFSP) is coordinated by Be Well at Work Wellness for Faculty & Staff, and serves staff, students, and their spouses/domestic partners, as well as employees at UCOP and LBNL who choose to continue breastfeeding after returning to work or school.
The BFSP program includes:
- Lactation rooms on campus with Ameda hospital-grade breastpumps
- Personal hygienikit to use with hospital-grade pumps sold at cost
- Breastfeeding classes facilitated by a certified lactation consultant

Academic & Workplace Support for Sexual Harrassment/Sexual Violence/Domestic Violence/Intimate Partner Violence
This Policy addresses the University’s responsibilities and procedures related to sexual violence, sexual harassment, retaliation, and other prohibited behavior as those terms are defined in this Policy (together, “Prohibited Conduct”) in order to ensure an equitable and inclusive education and employment environment. The Policy defines Prohibited Conduct and explains the administrative procedures the University uses to resolve reports of Prohibited Conduct.
