Laboratory

More than 90,000 lab tests are performed at UHS each year!

Our lab is licensed by the State of California and accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory HealthCare (AAAHC). We are a CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvements Amendment) certified facility and testing performance is constantly monitored by API (American Proficiency Institute).

Wait times

Wait times depend on many factors, primarily how many people have arrived before you. Labs are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. The average time for the entire process is approximately 25 minutes, but you can be finished in as little as 10 minutes depending on how many people are waiting. The Lab does not make appointments.

Tests with special timing

A few lab tests have special requirements or timing:

  • AM Cortisol must be drawn before 9 am (plan to arrive at the lab at 8:30 am)
  • The lipid panel requires a 12-hour fast. This means no food or alcohol, only water, and medications during those 12 hours. TIP:  Most patients find it easier to finish eating an evening meal at 8:30 pm, then come to the lab at 8:30 am to get blood drawn, then eat breakfast.

Otherwise, follow your clinician’s instructions regarding lab testing.

Lab results

Results can take anywhere from one hour to six weeks, depending on the test. Lab results are provided by the clinician and/or nurse. Depending on the test, your result will also be available on your eTang patient portal. Lab personnel do not report lab results.

Lab orders from non-UHS providers are no longer accepted

Due to current lab capacity challenges, effective 12/1/23, our lab will no longer be accepting orders from outside (non-UHS) clinicians. We are very sorry for the inconvenience and for any financial challenges this may pose. Please know that we did not make this decision lightly or without exploring other options and that we are working hard to rebuild capacity so that we can resume this service in the future, with improved reliability and efficiency. We will notify you once this has been achieved.
