Family Friendly Benefits
Graduate student benefits
As many as one in ten of Berkeley's graduate students is a parent
of a young child or children. Recognizing the special challenges involved
in balancing advanced degree programs and family responsibilities, the
University is committed to supporting policies, programs, and services
to help graduate student parents meet their family care obligations while
they pursue their academic goals. Please go to The Graduate Division website for a complete list of programs and grants.
The Graduate Division is proud to offer two new programs this Fall that provide much-needed support for student parents:
(1) childcare reimbursements for GSRs
(2) back-up childcare for all student parents
Both programs have been announced to students via e-Grad and will be available starting this fall.
More information for student parents may be found on the “students with families” section of the Graduate Division website.
Childcare reimbursements for GSRs:
This program is for student parents with non-school age children. To be eligible, graduate students must have at least a 25% or greater GSR appointment during the semester or summer session. The grant will reimburse up to $900 in childcare costs per semester, or up to $600 during the summer. Graduate Division will bear the cost of this new program and administer the process. You may direct students to our website for further program information and a link to an application form.
Please note that this program is similar to the childcare reimbursement for GSIs, tutors and readers, which is administered by UC Berkeley’s Labor Relations Office.
Back-up childcare for all student parents (graduate and undergraduate):
The Graduate Division has partnered with the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Student Services and Fees and the Hutto Patterson Charitable Foundation to create a highly subsidized back-up childcare program for all registered graduate and undergraduate students, who are parents of children aged 6 weeks up to 18 years of age. Each student will be eligible for up to 60 hours of in-home and/or center-based care at the rate of $4/hr (in-home) and $2/hr (center-based). The service is administered by Bright Horizons, a national provider of employer-sponsored childcare and back-up care.
Detailed information about the program, with step-by-step instructions on how students can register, are available on a dedicated program website.
Student Parent Grant
Registered graduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents
and are parents (single or married) with dependent children may apply
for a need-based award funded and administered by the Graduate Division. This grant may be applied toward housing,
dependent health insurance, child care, and/or fee and tuition costs. The application can be found online
International Graduate Student Parent Grant
All registered international graduate students who have been enrolled at Berkeley for at least one academic year and have a child living with them in the Bay Area are eligible to apply. Grants will be awarded based on financial need and changes in the applicant's financial situation. Grants are applied to tuition & fees or as a stipend.
