SHIP for Non-Registered Students (Filing Fee, Withdrawal or Concurrent Enrollment status) and Graduates on SHIP

Who May Enroll

Non-registered graduate students of the University of California Berkeley campus on Filing Fee or Withdrawal status (see definitions below), and undergraduate students on Concurrent Enrollment status (see definition below), may purchase voluntary plan coverage for a maximum of one semester while on special status. The student must have been covered by the plan in the term immediately preceding the term for which the student wants to purchase.
NOTE: Filing Fee, Withdrawal and Concurrent Enrollment students are NOT automatically enrolled.
For purposes of SHIP eligibility, the following definitions apply:
Filing Fee (Graduate students only):
Graduate students must apply to their academic departments for official Filing Fee status.  Filing Fee status is in lieu of registration to either file a dissertation or thesis, or to take a comprehensive exam, Filing Fee students are not allowed to take courses while on Filing Fee.  Filing Fee can only be used once. To complete the Voluntary SHIP enrollment process, a student must submit a letter from his or her academic department confirming the student’s approved Filing Fee Status to the Student Health Insurance Office.

Withdrawal Status (Graduate students only):
Graduate students must apply to their academic departments for official Withdrawal status. This status applies to graduate students who are on department-approved leave to perform field research, work on their dissertations, or for other reasons permitted by the department. To complete the Voluntary SHIP enrollment process, a student must submit a letter from his or her academic department confirming the student’s approved Withdrawal Status to the Student Health Insurance Office.

Concurrent Enrollment Status (Undergraduate students only):
Undergraduate students in their final semester of study who are completing degree requirements or recovering from academic probation through UC Berkeley Extension's Concurrent Enrollment Program are considered to be on Concurrent Enrollment Status. To complete the Voluntary SHIP enrollment process while on Concurrent Enrollment Status, a student must submit a letter of approval from his or her academic department and proof of payment for the class(es) or class schedule at UC Berkeley Extension to the Student Health Insurance Office.

UC Berkeley Filing Fee/Withdrawal Students (grads only)

$2,765.00 - one semester only

UC Berkeley Concurrent Enrollment (undergrads only)

$1,973.00 - one semester only

Enrollment Maximum

SHIP coverage for all eligible non-registered students is available for a maximum of one semester onlyAfter graduation, a non-registered student in filing fee, withdrawal or concurrent enrollment status is eligible to enroll in the SHIP Continuation plan for one additional semester.

How to Enroll

ENROLLMENT PERIOD:  Fall semester enrollment period is July 15-September 15 with an effective coverage date of August 15 and Spring semester enrollment period is December 15-February 15 with an effective coverage date of January 15.

ENROLLMENT PROCESS:  Enrollment must be completed online during the enrollment period.  Please visit the Aetna Student Health website.
