Outdoor Gems in and around Berkeley

April 13, 2017

Spring is here! It’s the perfect weather to be outdoors to soak in all that beautiful California sun before we get bogged down in the books during RRR week. There are many places around Berkeley you can visit to enjoy the beauty that nature has to offer. Check out 7 Scientifically-Backed Health Benefits of Being in Nature.

This park is one of the hidden gems of Berkeley. Located in the residential area of North Berkeley, this park is famous for its beautiful scenery and the giant cement slide that is 40 feet tall! When I first got there, I was so scared to go down on it. Many people come here for a nice barbeque with friends and family while taking in the beauty of nature. The Berkeley Rose Garden is located right across the street and overlooks the whole bay. Just take the 65 up on Euclid and you’re there! It’s worth the trip.

My first time at the botanical gardens was for a field trip for a class (Bio 1B anyone?). Since then, it’s become one of my favorite places to go to enjoy my day off! My favorite part is hands down the Redwood Grove. It feels so rejuvenating to be surrounded by giant Redwood trees and to breathe in the fresh air. Interestingly, you can occasionally find banana slugs crawling around! Other than Redwood Grove, the botanical garden offers a chance to see many different types of plants from a wide range of landscapes.

San Francisco is great because you have fun, touristy places like Pier 39 and Union Square. But only a bus ride away, you can find yourself in this heavenly paradise that overlooks the entire west coast. This is the site where it used to house the Sutro Baths, a public saltwater swimming pool that operated in the early 1900s. The building burned down in 1966 and only its remnants remain. Make sure to also check out the man-made labyrinth that’s located along the trails!
