Chronic Hepatitis B in the API Community

Foreign-born Asian American and Pacific Islanders (API) are at increased risk of chronic Hepatitis B infection (see Are You at Risk for more information). Many came from countries where up to 20% of the population are chronically infected at birth or early childhood. The incidence is highest among Vietnamese, Cambodian, Chinese and Laotian Americans. Since most individuals have no symptoms, they may not know they are infected. Chronic Hepatitis B infection can increase the risk of liver cancer.
UHS supports and offers a comprehensive strategy to fight Hepatitis B including:
- Hepatitis B vaccination
- Identification of silent Hepatitis B carriers so that these individuals can take appropriate measures to protect their health, avoid further risk of injury to the liver, and prevent spread of the infection to others.
- Provide Hepatitis B carriers with information about who may benefit from available treatment and when treatment is not indicated, including rationale, risks and options.
