Become a sex-pert!
Thank you for your interest in SHEP. Applications for the 2012-2013 academic year are currently being accepted. SHEP applications can be submitted via hard copy to the Health Promotion office located at the Tang Center in room 2010. Applications are due Monday, April 1st by 12Noon. Any applications received after the due date and time will not be considered.
In addition to submitting a completed application, interested students should sign-up for a group interview at the Health Promotion office. Upon scheduling your interview you will be provided with a document on safer sex basics which you will need to review prior to your interview. Why join SHEP?

  • Experience: you will gain valuable experience in public speaking, facilitating, teaching, and health education
  • Knowledge: you will learn a lot about sexual health, and get to apply that knowledge as a peer educator
  • Community service: you will provide an important service to your fellow Cal students
  • Social interaction: you will get to know 20 other peer educators who share your interest in sexual health
  • Units: you will get 2 units per semester (given at the end of the school year)

What are we looking for?
You don't need any previous knowledge about sexual health to be a SHEP Intern - that's what training is for. Our current interns represent majors ranging from public health to political science and MCB to math. We're looking for the following qualities in our interns:

  • Enthusiasm
  • Commitment
  • Open mind
  • Communication skills, including public speaking
  • Willingness to learn
  • Social media experience


Program Requirements
SHEP is a year-long commitment, from August 2012 until May 2013. Please keep in mind that all interns are expected to participate in:

  • Training: To be held in August 2012
  • Weekly Seminar: Tuesdays from 4-6PM, fall semester and spring semester
  • Retreat: To be held in January 2013
  • Workshops/outreach: several per semester
  • Special events: participation in various events, especially National Condom Day in February 2013
  • Social media development: Maintain and contribute to SHEP Talk blog, Facebook page, eNews, and more.
  • Group project: Semester long project to improve SHEP or increase awareness of a specific sexual health issue.
  • Attitude: maintain enthusiasm, motivation, and a teamwork mentality throughout the year and in every component of SHEP!
