Confidentiality

Your HW maintains your privacy by not disclosing your identity or your health concerns with other students, except if you or others may be in danger. All HWs seek consultation for quality assurance purposes, but this is done without disclosing your identity. We take your privacy very seriously.

Fees All HW services are provided free of charge.
First aid Your HW is certified by the American Red Cross in Standard First Aid and Adult CPR, and can help determine how serious your injury is and whether immediate medical attention is advisable.
Health Tips Your HW creates a weekly fact sheet called a "Health Tip" based on topics that residents want to see addressed. They provide helpful facts, symptoms, prevention and self-care tips, and resources for help. You can even ask your HW to email you a copy or request a specific topic.
Helping a friend Your HW can help if you are concerned about a friend's (or your own) alcohol/drug use, eating habits, or depression, and determine how you can reach out your friend, including seeking help and developing an intervention plan.
Illness Your HW can check out many common illnesses such as allergies, colds and flus, fever, food poisoning, headaches, menstrual cramps, nausea, sore throat and many more. Your HW also has information on helpful home remedies.
Insurance questions Your HW can answer questions about SHIP and outside health insurance, help you understand your health plan, and notify you of important filing dates and procedures.
Legwork and research Your HW can do research about specific health concerns that you are experiencing, and provide the most up-to-date information about symptoms, treatment and prevention.
Link to resources and services Your HW can tell you what the Tang Center offers, including services, hours, insurance, and your options as a patient. Your HW can also refer you to community providers if you prefer to seek assistance away from Cal.
Medical assistance Your HW can help you figure out how to get to Urgent Care or an emergency room if you need immediate medical assistance. By request, your HW may also be able to go with you to an appointment, Urgent Care or the emergency room.
Peer counseling

Your HW is available to you to listen to your concerns and provide confidential, one-to-one peer counseling if you need to talk about a personal matter, such as academics, relationships, family issues, making friends or self-esteem.

Presentations Your HW conducts periodic presentations and organizes guest speakers on a variety of topics based on resident interest and need, including safer sex, massage, stress management, healthy eating and much more.
Suggestions and feedback If you have ideas for your HW, community issues you are concerned about, or have suggestions for improving his/her work, please let us know! Contact your HW directly or our Program Coordinator who will pass on your feedback (anonymously, if you prefer).
Supplies Your HW can provide limited first aid supplies (e.g. band-aids, gauze), safer sex supplies (e.g. condoms, lubricant), or lend you a thermometer, an Ace bandage or an ice pack. For your safety, HWs cannot give out medication, such as cough drops and aspirin, but can help you locate some if needed.
Training Your HW can conduct mini-trainings for your managers, hall staff, or other leaders on how to deal with a given concern in your living center, such as alcohol abuse, sanitation, or conflict mediation.
