Assembly Bill 1025: Lactation Accommodation on
Campus
Assembly
Bill (AB) 1025, effective January 1, 2002, requires California employers
to make reasonable efforts to provide break time and space for employees
who are nursing their infants to express milk during work hours. The
Breastfeeding Support Program is assisting the University with implementation
of AB 1025.
Under this bill, employers are required to make reasonable efforts to provide an appropriate, private space for breastfeeding mother to express milk. The law is specific to state that this may not be a toilet stall. Managers and supervisors should assist employees who do not have a private office with finding an appropriate space in their building.
For those employees who cannot be accomodated in their building, there are four on-campus lactation rooms equipped with hospital-grade electric breast pumps. To learn more about the rooms, contact Health*Matters at (510) 643-4646 or at .
For non-exempt employees, the break time accommodation may run concurrently with rest periods provided pursuant to personnel policy. If you need assistance with the break time accommodation, contact your Department Employee Relations Specialist, or the Customer Service Line, Office of Human Resources at (510) 642-7163.
